Services Training and Employment Program By 1997, government cutbacks were making it harder for unemployed co-op members to get the training they needed to get back to work. The Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto (CHFT) responded by starting the Training and Employment Program. We knew that many people just needed a chance to learn some new skills and a little help contacting employers. The program was an immediate success and we soon established our own training facility, the CHFT Computer Centre. For six years, CHFT has provided co?op residents and other members of the community with the skills they need to get jobs as administrators, clerks, receptionists, and customer service representatives. We offer an eight-week computer and employment skills course for people who are receiving social assistance. Participants learn Microsoft Office 2000 including:
Participants also attend weekly workshops on job search techniques and résumé writing. Our vocational programs manager works closely with each participant and, at the end of the course, almost 65% of the participants find new jobs. CHFT’s Training and Employment Program is delivered with the support of the CHFT Charitable Fund in partnership with the City of Toronto. More than 160 businesses and organizations have hired graduates. Email: info@coophousing.com
